Youth Inquiry Network: An Innovative Method for Providing Students with Research Opportunities

Updated: Jun 3

Have you ever wished to learn more about scientific research, get your work published, or become well-known on social media? Please welcome Evan Daun. He not only shared the same dream, but he also made it come true. The lone roadblock? Identifying the ideal chance. So he made the decision to start it himself, which is how the Youth Inquiry Network came to be. Students in high school and college can apply to have their own research papers published online in this community. Not only that, but YIN has additional offers for you!

The Youth Inquiry is a student-led nonprofit organization that's been cleverly designed for and to attract students with a similar interest in the field of research. Jan 15th marks the date where the Youth Inquiry Network was founded. It all started when the founder, Evan Duan had noticed the blandness of opportunities made for teens by teens; so they made one themselves. The organization currently holds over 680 members and 50 staff members. Remarkably, they’ve garnered international recognition as a 501(c)(3) organization.

Not only does this community offer the platform to publish research papers, but different opportunities have been made to address several aspects of the research world. For example: Online Research Algorithm Tools, Professor Advice, Workshop + Webinars, and Virtual Research Programs.

I got the opportunity to speak with Evan Duan, the creative mind behind YIN: Youth Inquiry Network, during this interview.

About the Youth Inquiry Network:

What sparked the idea for creating the Youth Inquiry Network, and how did you and your friends get started?

Conducting research has been such a popular trend recently amongst highschoolers who are looking to stand out while also contributing towards their passion. However this activity is considered expensive and cheap with companies such as polygence and lumiere education charging thousands of dollars to students for conducting research.

How has the Youth Inquiry Network grown since its launch earlier this year?

Since launch we have managed to gain 680+ community members (as of April 19th). We are in the process of releasing our first ever revision program as well as webinars + workshops. Our long term projects include a virtual research program, online algorithm tool (utilizing ML + AI), mentorship program, and finally a journal & archive in collaboration with MME Network.

What makes the Youth Inquiry different and appealing to teens interested in research?

We offer free and accessible solutions to research. Not only that but we offer a community where like minded students can connect and grow together.

Opportunities Offered by YIN:

Can you explain the different committees within the Youth Inquiry Network and what kinds of projects members can get involved in?

We don't have “committees” yet but I'll assume you will be talking about the virtual research programs where we pair up highschoolers in groups. We plan on offering all disciplines within STEM and based on our professor available (from our board of advisor) we can have the professors assist and guide the students on research.

Besides writing papers, what else can teens expect to experience when they join the Youth Inquiry Network?

A community where students from all across the world can connect.

Tell us more about the YIN's plans for the upcoming scientific journal & archive. What can teens look forward to?

The upcoming scientific journal is a collaboration with MME Network. We plan on showcasing all of our students' research projects through this journal. We aim for this journal as a secondary means of showcasing their passion and dedication.

What do I Think?

I really believe that this new non-profit organization has the capacity to grow into something much greater. Within three months, they have become well-known on social media. Students are participating and sharing their articles from all over the world. I think that YIN's commitment to inclusivity and their publishing philosophy are what really make them stand out. New members now find the procedure a great deal simpler, allowing them to pursue their passions aspirations headfirst. The possibility to join a research group, which offers priceless support and direction, encourages collaboration, and speeds up the publication process, was also very interesting to me. It seems obvious to take advantage of this chance, don't you think?
